Mixed Color Vocabulary

Below I have compiled a short vocabulary list of mixed colors on horses.
I already have one post in regards to color so if you would like information on Bay, Buckskin, Palomino, or Black colors please see the following: Bay-Buckskin-Palomino-Black.

Leopard – Spots on a white coat similar to Dalmatian or leopard spots. These do not have to cover the entire horse, rather leopard spotting can just show up on portions of the coat.

Piebald / Pinto – A horse with patches of two colors. Typically white and black.

Skewbald – A horse with patches of white and another color (typically not black).

Red Roan / Strawberry Roan – A chestnut colored horse with white or gray mixed in, giving it an almost dusty reddish appearance.

Bay Roan – A horse with a bay (brown) colored coat with white or gray mixed in.

Blue Roan – A horse with a black colored coat with white or light gray mixed in. This is often sometimes applied to horses with a dark gray or similar coat with white or light gray mixed in which gives the horse the misty blue hue.

Rabicano / White Ticking – Roaning in a specific area of the horse. A horse with this coloring will also have white at the top of the tail.

Sabino Color – White spotting on horses caused by a specific gene that can be tested for. The sabino color gene can sometimes be recognized by a roaning pattern on the edges of the white spots.

A Child's Bliss

"So God made a wonderful creature
And a free spirit
He made every feature
I wish to come near it

So every day
Torture I live
Every day I pray
Oh what I’d give

What’s a dream?
What’s a wish?
Nothing it may seem
But it’s a child’s bliss"

Equipment Vocabulary

WESTERN SADDLE – A saddle such as the one used by cowboys, it has a saddle horn and is designed for long hours of riding and also for roping cattle.

ENGLISH SADDLE – A saddle designed for showing and jumping horses, without a saddle horn. The stirrups are typically hoisted higher as well to allow the rider to rise in the seat.

SADDLE HORN – This is on western saddles. On the front of the saddle there is a "horn" sticking up, typically used for tying a rope around so you can rope cows, however, since they are there people do use them for other things.

STIRRUPS – The two straps hanging off the sides of the saddle to put your feet in.

GIRTH STRAP  - The strap on the bottom of the saddle that goes around the horse's girth (chest) designed to keep the saddle in place.

SADDLE BLANKET - The blanket that goes underneath the saddle. This prevents chaffing and can also absorb sweat.  (The pink clothe in the picture below.)

Want To Be Your Friend

"Don’t push me
I’ll go
If you’d just see
I want to be your friend

I’m not just a dumb beast
Some stupid animal
With brains in the least
Just listen and you’d know

All you do is shove
Hit, holler, and hate
Do you not understand love
Or do you not care

If you’d just stop
And not be so determined
To stay on top
And be the boss

Stop yanking the bit
You’re hurting mouth
Why do you feel the need to hit
I didn’t mean to trip"
